National representation of Spanish publishers
The Federación de Gremios de Editores de España assumes the representation of the collective of Spanish publishers both at the federation level and at the institutional level in all issues of general interest for the sector.
The activities program of the Federación de Gremios de Editores de España entails a direct and regular relation with associations of booksellers, distributors and graphics to discuss issues such as fixed price, books promotion, electronic transmission of data, establishing a common position on the impact that new technologies are having on the book trade, book taxation, fight against publishing piracy and illegal copyright, postage fees or books distribution.
In this respect, the book sector has a consolidated internal organisation through the Book Chambers and the Federación. This structure is the appropriate way for the domestic representation of publishers, graphic arts professionals, booksellers and distributors as well as for the defence of the general interests of the companies of the sector.
Additional entities that collaborate with this Federación de Gremios de Editores de España are the Writers, Librarians, Cultural Magazines, Collective Right Management associations, the University Publishers Associations and the cultural commissions of the political parties.
Apart from this inter-association representation, the Federación represents the collective of Spanish publishers at the Government administration level. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and its State Secretaries for Education and Culture, the General Directorate for Books, Archives and Libraries, the Ministry of Economy and the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade, the General Directorate for Trade and Investment, the Tax Ministry, the General Directorate for taxes, the Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish Agency for International Co-operation, the Spanish Trade Offices and the Cultural Departments of the Spanish Embassies abroad, the Cultural Commissions of the Congress and Senate, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Community and Townhall of Madrid, Government of Catalunya, Townhall of Barcelona through its institute of culture, the Fondation for Continuous Education (FORCEM), the International University Menéndez Pelayo, IFEMA, Fira de Barcelona, the Spanish Centre for Reprographic Rights, IBERIA, and the Spanish Post are fundamental, with their sponsorship in some cases, and collaboration in others, to ensure that the Federación reaches its objectives and for this reason we keep close contact with to continue our mutual collaboration started many years ago.
Likewise, in the past few years, the Federación has created new ways of collaboration with institutions and organisms whose objectives are, in some ways, the promotion and the diffusion of books and reading. This also explains why the Federación maintains a relation of collaboration with the Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez, the Fundación Bartolomé March, Fesabid and the Fundación Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes and is a member of the Fundación Biblioteca de Literatura Universal.
International representation of Spanish Publishers
One of the statutory objectives of the Federación de Gremios de Editores is the representation of the Spanish publishers at the international level. For this reason, the information, collection and organisation of the documentation and the exchange with books professionals of other countries are fundamental tasks to define the Federación's policy and to keep the Spanish publishers informed of the events and evolution of the book market. The Federación tries to be present in all the international forums related to the publishing sector or to related matters such as book commercialisation, professional training for publishing or royalties. The participation of the FGEE in international book fairs combines this objective with that of presenting the Spanish publishing production abroad.
The Federación represents its publishers at the international level through its membership in the most representative international professional publishers associations:
- International Publishers Association (IPA), which represents publishers associations of more than sixty-five countries. (enlace)
- Grupo Interamericano de Editores (GIE), which represents all the Cámaras del Libro of Latin America. (enlace)
- Federation of European Publishers (FEP), which has a reduced action field, but through its direct relation with the European Commission plays an essential role. (enlace)
- Centro Regional para el Fomento del Libro en América Latina y el Caribe (CERLALC), which is an organism in which the Federación participates with a consultant - listener status because the departments of the states members in charge of cultural matters have a representation. (enlace)
The Federación also collaborates with the International Federation of Organisations for the management of Copyright IFRRO and the European Association for the Professional Training of Publishers and Booksellers ABPTOE.
